How Treasury Coupon Payments Work — the mechanics

The coupon rate is fixed at auction. Your cash coupon does not rise if you paid a premium, and does not fall if you bought at a discount — yield captures that.

Notes and bonds pay coupon twice a year. Each payment is half the annual coupon times face. Bills pay nothing until maturity.

Buy between coupon dates and you pay accrued. The next coupon is yours in full. That is standard, not a trick.

TreasuryDirect deposits coupons to your linked account. Brokers credit the cash to the brokerage. Neither reinvests automatically unless you set a sweep or a roll.

Official sources (US Treasuries)

Primary statistics and prospectuses for US Treasuries are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).

Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.

Klíčové body

  • Notes and bonds pay coupon twice a year.
  • Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
  • Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.

FAQ

Are Treasury coupons taxed?
At federal level, interest is taxable for US persons; many states exempt Treasury interest. Rules differ for non-US holders.
