What Happens When a Treasury Bond Matures — the mechanics
Maturity is an operational event, not a market call. If you needed the cash on that date, you succeeded. If you still want duration, you must buy another security.
Face value is paid. The CUSIP dies. TreasuryDirect may roll if you selected reinvestment; otherwise you get cash.
TIPS maturity pays inflation-adjusted principal (with the par floor rules for original issues). Check the index ratio on that CUSIP.
Maturity cash in an IRA is still IRA cash. It is not a taxable withdrawal until you take a distribution.
