You can buy gilts via a broker, a stocks-and-shares ISA, a gilt fund or, in some cases, the DMO’s purchase service.

How to Buy UK Gilts — the mechanics
Retail investors usually buy gilts through a platform or ISA. Institutions bid in DMO auctions. The route you choose affects costs, tax wrappers and the exact gilt you hold.
A UK stocks-and-shares ISA can hold individual gilts or a gilt ETF. SIPPs can too. A general dealing account is taxable on coupon as income (with gilt-specific UK tax rules on some gains — check current HMRC gilt stripping and accrued-income scheme notes).
The DMO’s purchase and sale service is aimed at smaller tickets and is not a live exchange. GEMMs (Gilt-Edged Market Makers) win auctions; you usually access that liquidity through a platform that faces a GEMM or a fund that does.
Costs that actually move the needle: bid–ask on an off-the-run line, ETF TER if you use a fund, and FX if you are not a sterling investor. Commission on a £10,000 ticket is often smaller than the spread.
Official sources (UK Gilts)
Primary statistics and prospectuses for UK Gilts are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).
Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.
Keskeiset huomiot
- A UK stocks-and-shares ISA can hold individual gilts or a gilt ETF.
- Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
- Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.
UKK
- Can I hold gilts in an ISA?
- Yes. Gilts and gilt ETFs can sit in a stocks-and-shares ISA, which can shelter coupon and gain from UK income and capital-gains tax, subject to ISA rules.
