Deposits: par stability and deposit insurance (up to a cap). Bonds: market price, possibly higher locked yield, sovereign credit.

Government Bonds vs Bank Deposits — the mechanics

If you cannot tolerate a statement that shows minus 8%, deposits or very short bills fit better than a 20-year bond fund. If you can hold to a date, a matching-maturity government bond can lock a rate deposits will not.

Deposits: mark at par on the statement, insurance limits where they exist, rate can be cut. Bonds: mark to market, government credit, yield locked if held to maturity.

A 5-year gilt is not a 5-year fixed deposit. One you can sell daily at a changing price; the other you often cannot break without a penalty, but the statement stays at 100.

Pick deposits for money you may need at par next month. Pick a dated government bond for money you need on a known future date and can tolerate a wiggly path.

Official sources (International guides)

Primary statistics and prospectuses for International guides are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).

Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.

Punti chiave

  • Deposits: mark at par on the statement, insurance limits where they exist, rate can be cut.
  • Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
  • Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.

FAQ

Which is safer?
For cash next month, a deposit or T-bill. For a payment in 2036, a 2036 government bond matching that currency can be the safer plan — despite price noise now.
