Swiss Bonds vs German Bunds — the mechanics

A euro-based investor buying Swiss bonds unhedged is speculating on the franc. Hedging CHF to EUR can erase the yield gap or more. Credit quality is not the interesting part of this pair — FX is.

CHF versus EUR, Confederation versus Bund, thinner versus deeper. Credit is excellent on both. The economic difference is currency and liquidity.

A euro-based investor in Swiss bonds is making a franc call. A Swiss pension in bunds is making a euro call, often hedged.

Do not buy Swiss paper because ‘Germany is riskier’ if your actual exposure is FX. Measure the spread in one currency first — which you can only do with a hedge.

Official sources (Switzerland)

Primary statistics and prospectuses for Switzerland are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).

Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.

Viktige punkter

  • CHF versus EUR, Confederation versus Bund, thinner versus deeper.
  • Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
  • Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.

FAQ

Which is safer?
Both score at the top of sovereign quality. Your liability currency should decide, not a beauty contest.
