UK Gilts vs Savings Accounts — the mechanics

Cash in a UK bank can be FSCS-protected up to the limit; a gilt’s credit is the UK state, but the market price can fall before maturity. If you can hold to redemption, that price path matters less.

FSCS covers eligible cash deposits up to the current limit per authorised firm. A gilt is not a bank deposit; it is a marketable Treasury security. Credit of the UK state is not the same legal wrapper as FSCS.

A one-year savings rate is fixed if you lock the term. A one-year gilt’s YTM is known if you hold to maturity, but if you sell at month three you get the then market price. Cash does not mark to market on your statement; gilts in a dealing account do.

ISA cash versus gilt ISA: both can be tax-sheltered. The choice is whether you need the price to stay at 100 on a screen tomorrow. If you do, cash or a very short bill-like gilt is the closer match.

Official sources (UK Gilts)

Primary statistics and prospectuses for UK Gilts are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).

Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.

Pontos essenciais

  • FSCS covers eligible cash deposits up to the current limit per authorised firm.
  • Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
  • Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.

FAQ

Can gilt prices fall while savings rates stay fixed?
Yes. A fixed savings rate does not mark to market. A gilt you sell early can be worth less than you paid.
