What Is a Gilt Auction — the mechanics
Gilt-edged market makers bid, a cover ratio is published, and a yield is printed. Retail investors usually buy afterwards in the secondary market rather than at the auction itself.
The DMO announces a calendar. GEMMs bid. A competitive auction sets a stop-out yield. Non-competitive bids, where allowed, take that yield. Syndication is used for some long or linker deals.
Retail investors almost never bid as GEMMs. You buy in the secondary market hours or days later, or via a fund that did participate.
Auction tails (stop-out versus mid-market) are a demand signal. A fat tail means the DMO paid up to place stock. It is not a reason to panic-sell a 2032 you already own.
