What Is Treasury Bond Duration?

A 30-year Treasury can have duration near 18–20 years: a 1% yield rise can imply a double-digit price drop.

What Is Treasury Bond Duration — the mechanics

Duration is why a ‘safe’ Treasury fund lost value in 2022. Safety of credit is not safety of price. Laddering and shorter tenors reduce that risk.

A 30-year Treasury has much more duration than a 2-year note even at the same coupon idea. That is why ‘I own Treasuries’ is not a risk statement until you say which.

Modified duration of a current 10-year note is typically high-7s to 9s depending on the coupon and yield. A 30-year can be mid-teens to high-teens.

Use our calculator, then check the broker’s duration on that CUSIP. Teaching models skip some Treasury day-count details.

Official sources (US Treasuries)

Primary statistics and prospectuses for US Treasuries are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).

Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.

Viktiga punkter

  • A 30-year Treasury has much more duration than a 2-year note even at the same coupon idea.
  • Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
  • Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.
